¿Por qué tarjetas de visita?
La práctica social de realizar visitas, tan en desuso en la actualidad, era una cuestión de educación para aquellas personas que deseaban tener una buena vida social.

Había casas en las que se establecían días y horas para recibir visitas y, algunos aún podemos recordar, como en las casas, mucho más amplias que las actuales, se tenían dos salones: el de diario y el de recibir las visitas.

Pero, ¿ qué ocurría cuando se iba de visita y no se encontraba a los dueños de la casa ?. Aquí entra en juego la famosa "tarjeta de visita". Si en la casa no estaban los señores, entonces se dejaba la "tarjeta de visita" al servicio, como muestra de que se había pasado por el domicilio y se daba por cumplida la visita. Y de esta práctica nació el término de la "tarjeta de visita".

Podemos decir que la "tarjeta de visita" era el acuse de recibo de que la visita se había realizado, con lo que se había cubierto el compromiso social. Ahora los señores de la casa estaban en la obligación de tener que devolver la visita.

Desde el siglo XIX la costumbre social de visitar a parientes y amigos, quedaba totalmente satisfecha estuviesen o no gracias a la tarjeta de visita. Pero no debemos olvidar un detalle: la tarjeta de visita siempre se entregaba al personal de servicio y nunca a los señores de la casa.

Si los señores de la casa estaban, cuando llegábamos al domicilio de éstos, el personal de servicio que nos habría la puerta nos preguntaba de parte de quien (a quien anunciaban) y en ese momento se les daba nuestra tarjeta de visita para que se la llevasen a los señores de la casa. Por supuesto, que este paso solo se realizaba la primera vez que se iba a una casa.

En la actualidad el uso de la tarjeta de visita ha cambiado, quedando bastante reducida al ámbito comercial, aunque aún se utilizan estas tarjetas de visita para ofrecer nuestra casa, para enviar algún tipo de regalo y otros usos similares, dado que las visitas de cumplido apenas existen. Además, actualmente, a nadie se le ocurre dejar una tarjeta de visita en la casa que va a visitar si no están los dueños de la casa.

Whether you are looking for a job or running a business, giving out business cards is crucial to marketing your skills or services. Even as a job seeker, develop the mindset of running the business of YOU, Inc. Here are some proven tips using business cards to increase your chances of landing a job or creating a business opportunity.

1. Never leave home without them. Before leaving home, your checklist should be expanded to include business cards, as part of "do I have my wallet/money, house keys, driver's license'" Any 'per chance' meeting is an opportunity to give out a business card. A morning run or a quick trip to the local store could be an opportunity to network. My wife and I always ask each other 'do you have business cards', before leaving the house. Make it a habit to carry business cards.

2. Insert a business card when mailing bill payments. Bills contain advertisements. Why can't you advertise your skills or services the same way' Insert a business card with your payment. You may not think a person in South Dakota who opens your credit card bill payment can help you. Never underestimate the power of networking. A movie, entitled '6 Degrees of Separation' points out we are 6 people away from knowing someone of influence. You could be 6 people away from knowing the President of the United Sates, your favourite movie star or someone who is in a position to hire your skills or services. Each of us knows someone, who knows someone, who knows someone etc. Developing this powerful networking attitude will be a fundamental source of continued success.

3. Use proper business card etiquette. Whenever you give a business card, ask for a business card. When given a business card, don't just take it and place it in your pocket. Make the person feel important by looking at their card for a few seconds. You might see something that could be a topic of discussion. Write comments on the card such as date, location and common points of interest. These comments will prove valuable when following up with that person. This also demonstrates a sincere interest in the other person. Then place it in your wallet. This lets them know they reside in a special place with you. "Skill with People" by Les Giblin is a book that expands on this approach. Make people feel important, in order to make yourself important to them.

4. Be generous. Give business cards out to everyone, including family and friends. Don't let vanity stop you from giving out your last business card or giving 2 at a time to each person. I have met many people who have totally missed the purpose of a business card. I once asked a person for a second business card, so I could refer his services. His response was "I only have a few cards left and I need them", as he looked again at his name on the card. Hoarding your business cards only makes your wallet feel full, not your bank account.

5. Ask for referrals. When giving a business card, people feel more comfortable when you ask; 'I would appreciate a referral, if you know anyone that could use my services'. Don't make people feel like they are on the spot. This approach disarms people much better than asking them, 'is your company hiring'' People naturally like to do favours for people. Saying 'could you do me a favour by referring my services to someone'. This always places you in a better position with them. They will feel better about helping you. Give them 2 cards.

6. Maximize every "per chance" meeting. You never know when you might meet someone who can help you. Family or friends social events could produce unexpected encounters with people. Don't discount those events. So you're going to a birthday party for your friend's kid. You never know whom you might meet. At a family holiday gathering last year, I met someone that has been instrumental in developing our business this year. Who would have thought this could happen by giving him a simple business card.

7. Place yourself at the right place at the right time. Have you been to a job fair or business conference and been disappointed with the networking results' Turn the tables around. Consider volunteering to help out at the job fair or other types of events. This puts you in a better strategic position for presenting your resume or business card. Company representatives might view you differently, if they know you are willing to go the extra mile in helping them make their presence easier to manage. Volunteering for events has been a very successful resource for my business partner and I to expanding our business. Zig Ziglar, one of the most successful sales trainers in the world says "if you help enough people get what they want in life, you will get what you want in life".

8. Use "In Your Face" follow up. Did you ever have a job interview or meeting with a recruiter, potential client or employer and wonder why they never called you back' 'Out of sight, out of mind' is the operative phrase to remember. Today's economic climate dictates you might be competing with 20, 50, 100 or more other people for the same position or contract. It's quite a task for people to keep track of each individual meeting. So it's up to you to give a person a reason to call you back. Immediately after a meeting snail mail a hand written note thanking the person for their time. Insert your business card. Now you're in the driver's seat in standing out from other people. If you get no response, do it again. Patience and persistence pays off.

9. Use promotions to promote YOU, Inc. Newspapers often have stories of people being promoted to high levels in different organizations' This is an opportunity for you. Consider getting some invitation size blank greeting cards. Use the Internet's search capabilities to find out the address of the company's executive offices. Send the blank invitation type card with a hand written note sincerely congratulating a person on their promotion. Insert your business card. For the cost of a 37-cent stamp, you have just made someone's day and may create an impression that makes a person feel compelled to respond back to you. Make it a habit to do this once a week. Remember '6 Degrees of Separation'. You just never know . . . People open invitation type envelops faster than any others.
10. Brand yourself with a slogan. Print a slogan on your business card that answers the question 'Why should I hire you' Or "What makes you different from everyone else'" A catchy phrase or slogan insures people ALWAYS associate a company name with their product or services. People remember even after the commercial is over. That's called branding. Companies pay big bucks to advertising agencies to come up with these lasting slogans. Consider doing the exact same thing on your business card. This is your insurance people remember you, after you meet. Don't just put Hortence Smiley, Accountant on your business card. Add something like "Financial Services With Integrity". A slogan makes all the difference between getting hired or not, because people will remember you long after a meeting

Eine Visitenkarte ist ein scheckkartengroßes Kärtchen mit Name und weiteren Daten einer Person. Visitenkarten werden beim Kennenlernen von Menschen ausgetauscht, um das Aufschreiben der Daten zu ersparen. Die Bezeichnung Visitenkarte rührt von der ursprünglichen Funktion: Sie wurde früher beim Besuch in hohem Hause dem Butler oder der Empfangsdame übergeben, die sie dann an den Hausherrn oder die Dame des Hauses weiterreichte.

Heute hat die Visitenkarte hauptsächlich im Berufsleben eine Bedeutung. Sie werden auf Messen oder Konferenzen ausgetauscht und bei jedem Erstkontakt zwischen möglichen Geschäftspartnern. Gewünschter Nebeneffekt ist die diskrete Mitteilung der eigenen Position im Unternehmen.

Fernöstliche Geschäftspartner legen Wert darauf, dass man ihre Visitenkarte mit beiden Händen hält und sorgfältig sowie mit einigen anerkennenden Worten studiert, bevor man sie respektvoll aufbewahrt, und empfinden es als Kränkung, wenn man sie (in der Brieftasche) achtlos in die Gesäßtasche steckt.

Visitenkarten haben kein standardisiertes Format, es hat sich jedoch die Scheckkarten-Größe (85,60 × 53,98 mm) eingebürgert, da diese am bequemsten zu transportieren ist und viele Aufbewahrungshilfen für dieses Format ausgelegt sind.

Sie enthalten nur selten ein Foto, aber immer den Namen und die Adresse und Telefonnummer der betreffenden Person. Geschäftliche Visitenkarten tragen außerdem Firmenlogo und Unternehmen sowie die Titel und Funktion der Person. Die Rückseite kann eine englischsprachige Version, eine Anfahrtskizze, ein Foto oder anderes enthalten. Für Visitenkarten gibt es eigene Täschchen bzw. kleine Behälter zum Aufklappen.

Im elektronischen Briefverkehr werden elektronische Visitenkarten benutzt.

Die erste Notiz über die Einführung des Visitportraits - der sogenannten Carte de Visite - findet sich in der französischen Zeitschrift La Lumiere vom 28. Oktober 1854.

Eine originelle Idee hatten E. Dellesert und Graf Aguado bezüglich der Verwendung kleiner Portraits. Bis jetzt trugen die Visitenkarten Namen, Adresse und zuweilen den Titel der Personen welche sie vorstellten. Weshalb sollte man nicht den Namen durch das Bildnis ersetzen können?
Nach einer anderen Version soll der Herzog von Parma als Erfinder der solcher Visitenkarten gelten. Er hatte 1857 den Einfall sich auf seine Visitenkarte ein Foto zu kleben. Den wirklichen Aufschwung bekam die Visitkartenfotographie durch den Pariser Fotographen Andre Adolphe Eugene Disderi anfang 1855, der ebenfalls die Carte de Viste erfunden haben soll.

Skaka däremot inte hand för mycket; det betraktas som ohygieniskt. - Vi ser oss i första hand som individer, japanen representerar sitt företag (han presenterar sig med ett visitkort med företagets namn först och säger inte "jag" utan "vi"). - Om en japan vill tacka nej till att göra affärer med dig så kommer han inte att säga detta direkt till dig, utan han kommer att vara "sjuk" eller "bortrest" när du ringer. - Ska du göra affärer med ett japanskt företag, tilltala inte med förnamn; räkna med att bli presenterad för alla på företaget, bl a med hjälp av ditt visitkort, (alla ska lära känna dig; japaner förhandlar i team, var och en ansvarig för sitt expertområde); buga lika djupt som de; försök inte pressa fram ett snabbt affärsbeslut, då drar de sig lätt ur (vid förhandling är japaner försiktiga, skickliga på att förhala och vägrar att låta sig jäktas; de måsta ha hela företaget med sig); undvik att vara burdus, otålig och följ etikettsreglerna noga; undvik att tala affärer första kvarten av ert möte utan börja med att tala om golf, backhoppning, skridsko etc. (populära sporter i Japan) men undvik skämt (om de inte är på egen bekostnad och lätta att förstå); om de förlorar ansiktet blir det ingen affär, så visa respekt och undvik att ställa dem mot väggen alltför mycket (även om du anser dig ha rätt); japansk förhandlingsstil är opersonlig och icke-emotionell (men känslorna finns där under utan; de måste gilla dig och lite på dig om det ska bli någon affär).
